Research about narrative,mise-en-scene etc

 In this post I will research narrative, mise-en-scene, cinematography, lighting, camera angles/shot, edited in film 'Promising Young Woman'.

                                                         Promising Young Woman (2020)

The narrative in this movie tells us about young woman haunted by a traumatic past as she navigates balancing forgiveness and vengeance.The narrative shows, they are both psychological dramas with a strong female lead and both use lighting to bring out the psychology of the film.

Mise en scene take a plase in Cassie's parents house, where she still lives,and in romantic scene in the pharmacy neon heightens the narrative in select environments. An experiment with colors was carried out. For example , at the Blue Star bar, a neon bright colors were used, and harsher lighting to show that the film was changing gear. In the cafe was more blue tones, emphasized by warm soft lights to show vivid state of mind of the main character.

'The shots became more static when Cassie is at home or in her other safe space at the cafe where she works.Outside of that, the composition is more on edge and angular. It's about playing with that juxtaposition again - dangerous and beautiful.' (Benjamin Kracun,2021).

Imaginative camera movements were at the forefront again for a scene that sees Cassie smash a car windscreen with a tyre iron. The sequence then moves to an interior shot of the car before elevating to reveal a wide shot of the freeway. This moment shows a significant change in direction in the film which up to here has been much static, utilising creeping camera movements.Were also used in some scenes Medium shot and Close-Up shot .

In my opinion ,the director and the whole team have done a very difficult and painstaking job to convey to the viewer the full depth of emotions and attitude to the situation.And this is noticeable from the setting of the light, location, the work of the videographer and to the smallest details in the processing of the film.

Editors were required to familiarise themselves with the footage for the edit including pre-roll and post-roll.
