Research about Roger Ebert
Here I will look at a film reviewer Roger Ebert and his work and discuss how he used language and who is his target audience.
Roger Ebert has been one of the best in American film critic history. He worked as a film critic for Chicago Sun-Times from 1967 until his death in 2013.When he was appointed as a film critic he did not take any course in film, he studied independently from books.
'One of the gifts a movie lover can give another is the title of a wonderful film they have not yet discovered' ( Roger Ebert)
Also he was teaching a film class in the University of Chicago's Fine Arts program. One of the reasons he started teaching was to teach himself. One friend give him a good advice: 'Just pause the film and think about what you see. You should to try it with your film class'.He did. The results were amazing. Basic rules: Anyone can shout 'stop' and discuss what they were looking at, or something that just came to mind with them. He scrambled through the film for two hours every day for a week, and the sessions had to be moved to the auditorium to ensure attendance was approaching a thousand. One thing he find very useful was that even smaller audiences can have someone who can answer any question.
Roger Ebert has been doing the 'shot at a time' sessions at film festivals and universities ,sifting through a film with the help of the audience. In this way , he attracted the audience to his work. Its audience were students at universities as well as all film enthusiasts and film festival goers.
In his film reviews he described color, lighting, shadows, construction, characters, dialogue, acting, history, sources, influences, and messages both obvious and buried. The language that he used for his writing was informal, unofficial. The tone of informal language is more personal, easier flow .
Roger Ebert's website has over 300 review films that Roger Ebert considered the best.
